The Next Chapter

Over the past few months I've not been writing as much on my blog as in the past. Instead, I have been writing chapters for upcoming books and will share all of this information in the near future. However, be on the lookout for a blog describing the emotions and stories of grace that were a part of races in Des Moines, St. Louis, DC, Springfield, San Antonio, and Las Vegas this fall. I also plan to share some of the details about future plans for TEAM 413. There is much ahead of us and the best is yet to come.

God's Pleasure

Recently I was in Des Moines, Iowa for the IMT Des Moines Marathon weekend. We had a wonderful time sharing with the great people of Des Moines and the surrounding area. It's such a great event!

On race day, I ran the half marathon. Somewhere along the 5 - 8 mile stretch through Water Works Park, there was a man playing the theme from the movie Chariots of Fire. The music is dramatic and a bit slow -- if you didn't know where the music originated, you simply wouldn't understand it's intensity!

I heard a man say, "Well, how boring is that -- they could at least play some music to fire me up!"

My mind raced back to that 1981 movie and the quotes of Eric Liddell. I thought they were worth sharing:

"You came to see a race today. To see someone win. It happened to be me. But I want you to do more than just watch a race. I want you to take part in it. I want to compare faith to running in a race. It's hard. It requires concentration of will, energy of soul. You experience elation when the winner breaks the tape - especially if you've got a bet on it. But how long does that last? You go home. Maybe you're dinner's burnt. Maybe you haven't got a job. So who am I to say, "Believe, have faith," in the face of life's realities? I would like to give you something more permanent, but I can only point the way. I have no formula for winning the race. Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way. And where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within. Jesus said, "Behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. If with all your hearts, you truly seek me, you shall ever surely find me." If you commit yourself to the love of Christ, then that is how you run a straight race."

"I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure."

When I run, I really do feel God's pleasure! Do you?

HERE and NOW

Today marks day 86 of my sabbatical from my teaching and administrative duties at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Using my very inadequate math skills, I believe that 100 days remain until I return to campus on January 4, 2012. I have accomplished much during these 83 days yet, I have a lot more to complete in the days ahead.

I have learned so much about “me” during my time off. This is the longest stretch of my adult life that I’ve had no real schedule to dictate my days. I’ve actually waited more than 30 years to have an opportunity like this. I’ve always been driven by a daily schedule – practice times in athletics, class time, appointments, meetings, and so much more. During the past few months I have found out that it’s not easy to drop a schedule oriented lifestyle. I even went so far as to actually try to create a schedule for myself …. Until my wonderful wife, Kiki, told me to stop it! In her words she proclaimed that this sabbatical was about recovery, rejuvenation, discovery, and rest! I’m not supposed to have a schedule according to her – and she’s right!

I’ve also taken a significant inventory of my heart, body, mind, and soul. I have pondered what God has in store for me. I have laughed and cried more in the past 86 days than at any point in my 53 years. God is doing much work in areas of my life that needed an overhaul. I had to let go of some things and allow Him to tear down walls – repair deep recesses of my heart and mind – and prepare me for the path that He has prepared for me. God is not through with this remodel and I look forward to the result of what He has in store for me.

Typically I’m a very forward thinker and it has been difficult for me to step back and think about the HERE and NOW. I have made an effort to retool my thought process. I have loosened the ties to the calendar, day-timer, check lists, and expectations that strangled me. I have allowed God to direct my days and it has been enlightening to say the least.

So, what has God got planned for me down the road? To be frank, I have no idea! But, I wait on His perfect timing to complete the work that He has started in me. My desire is to please Him and I will give it my ALL in order to ensure that He is pleased with my labor and that others will see the evidence of Him in my life.

This is my blog – so, I can give all the advice that I want to give! At the risk of sounding like Dr. Phil or one of those other “self help” coaches, here’s my suggestion to you – drop the schedule for a few days and allow God to take control. Oh, sure you have to stay on track for your family, job, friends, etc. But, just relax for a day or two – chill out and listen for God’s voice through others and through all that surrounds you. Drop the pretense that you must be constantly busy and allow God to do a good work in you! I think that you’ll learn, as I have, that we are chained to a life that we have created for ourselves instead of one that God has planned for us!

THANK YOU!

The words have not come easy for me -- I have not been able to adequately express my thanks to all of you who supported us through your prayers, comments, postings, actions, and MILES during our recent GRACERUNNER JOURNEY. I know many of you received hundreds of emails that filled up your inbox -- but, I can't apologize for something that God started. I am sorry that some people left the group or asked for us not to send so many updates. We needed you to know what was going on so, we continued! Thanks to all of you who stuck with us as if you were right there beside us.

It has taken me days to process the depth and breadth of what had happened over that 10 days -- a period of time that has changed my life forever. I'm still not sure that I have fully grasped the fullness of God's love through all of you during this time.

Your willingness to go the extra mile with me was God's way to keep me moving forward. This journey was never about 413 miles to Him. It was about bringing glory to Him and allowing all of you to be part of the journey. His timing is ALWAYS perfect! When we let go of what we want to do "ourselves" and commit it to Him, it's amazing what He will do!

Through this journey a firestorm was created to the glory of God. We caught lightning in a bottle for a few days. There was so much "togetherness" and I saw the fruit of our eight years of labor for TEAM 413. I saw something happen that I had prayed for each day for the past five years. NOW we can't let it stop! We have to keep moving forward -- we have to stay under His grace -- we have to run the race and fight the good fight -- we have to finish the drill!

The First Mile

Tomorrow morning we begin GRACERUNNER JOURNEY - 10 days - 413 miles - ONE Goal! To Glorify God! Allow me to thank each of you who follow and support TEAM 413 and who have believed in me when others haven't. The first mile is dedicated to YOU!

This first mile will be emotional for me. It will mean that we have hit the pavement on a journey that I never thought possible. It will be about miles and miles of training, working out, and pushing myself further than ever before. It will be a celebration of God's goodness and grace!

Please pray for us as we venture into the unknown. Pray for our crew and all the runners who come out to the venues to run with me and support our efforts. Pray for funding to continue as we travel the roads of America.

I believe in Team 413!

For the last five years, I have been honored to volunteer with Team 413. I’ve worn the shirt, worked the expos, ran the races, and met the runners. I’ve been blessed by the stories of lives that have been touched by the amazing power of Jesus Christ.

TEAM 413 is real. To plagiarize a slogan, it’s not just a shirt it’s an adventure in love. That’s exciting! Under the leadership of Chris Gillespie, members are meeting and sharing now more than ever. The fellowship is expanding with new pre and post race gatherings and speaking engagements. Old friendships are being rekindled and new friendships born. Christians are becoming runners and runners are becoming Christians. Much more is on the horizon.

As many of you know, to raise awareness of the mission and raise money to fund the activities of Team 413, Chris Gillespie is embarking on a 413 mile 10 day run. A run to the glory of God! We all can’t run 413 miles, but everyone can be involved.

I have a few suggestions:

1. Pray for Chris on his run, for health, endurance, and good weather.

2. Show your support by contributing to the 413 mile GRACERUNNER JOURNEY to the glory of God.

3. Tell your friends. Let’s take this event viral!

4. If Chris comes to a city near you, go out and support him. He’s a great guy and he’d love to run a mile with you.

5. Volunteer for a future Team 413 event.

6. Contact Chris about speaking at your church, school, or to your running group.

7. One more thing… Join me in a 413 mile run. Not 413 miles in 10 days but, one mile a day for 413 days. Beginning on May 21^st, the last of day Chris’s 10 day journey. I’m pledging to start running at least one mile a day for 413 days and contribute a dollar to Team 413 for each day I run. The streak will end on July 7, 2012. What can you buy for a dollar a day? Not much, but you can help reach people for Christ and encourage fellow Christians to enjoy God’s gift of physical activity. If you like, find friends to sponsor you. You can make your contribution anytime during your streak; I just ask that you let me know of your commitment to do the run. I’m hoping at least 20 of my fellow 413’ers will join me and bind together to encourage each other. Let’s make this a fun run to the glory of God.

In honor of my Mom -- on this Mother's Day

MEMORY AND HONOR

Mother went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 18, 2008. She was a woman of unwavering character, strong faith, and a heart for others that had no equal.

She was, without a doubt, the most selfless person I have ever known. During my lifetime, I never saw her place herself before others. Mother would always give much more that she would take. She modeled “selfless-ness” in every aspect of her life. Everyone else always came first.

Gladys Gillespie was a lady to the very end. She had movie star looks -- yet, was beautiful to the core of her soul. Her willingness to serve others, her sense of humor, and her wry smile are engraved in my heart and mind forever.

My mom was the real deal. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend above reproach. She is missed, but her legacy will live forever in all who knew her. We celebrate her life and God is glorified in our loss as she sits at the feet of Jesus Christ in Heaven today!

My prayer on this Mother's Day is that every child should feel the kind of love that I received from my Mother and that each Mom will love as my Mother loved -- relentlessly, unwavering, and unconditionally!

God Will Get Your Attention! -- 25 Years Later

This edition of GRACERUNNER JOURNAL is an excerpt from my book, GRACERUNNER - FAITH ON THE RUN. As you read, you'll soon find out much about me that you don't know. You'll also notice that my "celebration" run this year is the 25th anniversary of the day that changed my life forever.

Race day is upon us in Nashville at the Country Music Marathon & Half Marathon. On this 25th anniversary of the event that you are about to read about, TEAM 413 celebrates because for the first time in our eight year history, we are an official charity of a race. The city of Nashville has embraced us and welcomed us through the years. But, this year is very special time -- thank you, Nashville!

Read my story and you'll understand why I must continue on this path that God has laid out for me....There truly is a place called grace!

GOD WILL GET YOUR ATTENTION!

A Miracle of God’s Unimaginable Grace!

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

On April 30, 1986, I left my office to go out for a run. The day had been shortened for me as the athletic teams at Samford University had finished practices a bit early on that day. As the Head Athletic Trainer at the university, it was extremely rare for me to get a little free time at the end of a day. So, I was excited about going out for a long run and having some time alone for reflection.

Little did I know that, on this day, my life would be changed forever. My life as I knew it would never be the same again.

I ran an unusually fast pace that day. I ran a route that was somewhat new to me. I took a wrong turn and had to make my way down to a very busy highway just about the time of rush hour. I couldn’t get across the highway to run against the traffic so, I moved to a spot several yards off the shoulder of the road and ran alongside the traffic. I had a few hundred yards to go before I would reach the Samford University campus entrance and be able to walk back to my office for a cool down from a very good run.

Suddenly, I was involved in a very serious, unimaginable accident. While running along the very busy Lakeshore Drive in Birmingham,Alabama, I was suddenly struck from behind. I was propelled forward more than 30 feet. I thought that I had been hit by a car! I was face down on the shoulder of the road and I knew that I was hurt badly. I couldn't feel my legs and I had significant pain up and down my spine. I was alert and conscious during the entire event but still had no idea what had happened. It felt as if time stood still.

Several people stopped to help. I heard sirens in the distance and a flurry of activity ensued. One of the people who stopped to render aid was a nurse. I spoke to her and told her that I was a certified athletic trainer and understood what was going on medically. Therefore, I had many questions. “Do I look broken up? Am I bleeding? What hit me?Will you take my blood pressure to make sure that I don’t have any internal injuries?”

The answers were good and bad. She told me that I did not appear to be mangled and that I was not bleeding. She took my blood pressure and assured me that it was fine. Still, I couldn’t feel or move my legs. I could hear the sound of sirens getting closer and closer. The nurse stayed with me until the paramedics arrived. I never saw her face. I never spoke to her again. Nearly 24 years later, I still do not know the name of this wonderful person who stopped to comfort and help me after this devastating accident.

Police arrived on the scene and I finally found out that I had been struck by something that had flown off the back of a pick-up truck. I didn’t know what the object was, but I knew that it must have been something pretty significant!

As I lay face down on the ground, I overheard the policemen describing the object that had hit me in order to record it in their incident report. I heard them describe the object as a “5 feet wide by 9 feet long sheet of plywood.” For some reason I thought -- “They don’t make plywood in that size.” So, I asked the EMT to get the policeman over to me. I asked the officer about this 5’ X 9’ sheet of plywood and was told that it was painted green with white stripes.

I was puzzled by this until he told me the rest of the story. Bottom line -- IT WAS A PING PONG TABLE! This “table” was being hauled on the back of a pick-up while two men held it down from the cab of the truck.This very large piece of wood, that soon became a flying missile, was not tied down or restrained in any way whatsoever. I had been hit by a flying ping pong table! What are the odds of that?

God went to the extreme to get my attention during my afternoon run! He does that sometimes! Sometimes it's a soft whisper, sometimes it’s a loud roar, and sometimes it's a ping pong table!

After being immobilized on a spine board by a team of very capable emergency medical personnel, I was transported to a nearby hospital where I regained feeling in my legs a couple of hours later. I was kept in that hospital for pain and injury management for 17 days. A few days after my first hospital stay, I was back in the hospital for surgery and a stay that lasted until the end of June of that year.

My sacrum had been crushed. I had lost nerves. I had significant muscle and other soft tissue damage. I had tremendous swelling and eventually turned black and blue from the top of my shoulders to the bottom of my feet. This injury would affect me for the rest of my life. I was very fortunate to be alive.

Serious rehabilitation was ahead of me. I was told that I would be lucky to walk normally again and running was most likely out of the question forever. In my wildest dreams, I could not envision running again.

If I had been struck a foot lower, my legs would have been damaged significantly. If I had been struck six inches higher, I most likely would have been a paraplegic. If I had been hit in the neck region, I would have been a quadriplegic. If I had been hit on the head, I could have been killed. God spared me for a reason. I continue to uncover His reasons more than two decades later.

Each year on the anniversary of this event, I celebrate that I'm able to walk and run. I celebrate that God used a tragic moment in my life to get my attention. I celebrate that he did a miracle in my life and now I have been blessed to be a part of the running community through a ministry such as TEAM 413 that was planned and ordained by God Himself! I praise Him that I am able to be a part of something that is so much bigger than we could ever comprehend, envision, dream, or imagine.

On the day of celebration each year that marks the anniversary of this STRANGE event and injury, I go out for a run at the time that the injury occurred, about 5:30 PM. Each year, I ask others to join me on that day either in person or wherever they are at that moment. They run with me and they pray with me. It’s always a very special day to thank God for miracles of GRACE.

Each day of my life I pray that God will continue to get our attention and then use us in ways that we cannot comprehend. I also pray that He will be glorified through the ministry that we call TEAM 413. God has entrusted us with such an amazing outreach ministry. We consider this a miracle after the incomprehensible circumstances that occurred on that day in April 1986.

As we continue on our journey through life, we give thanks for God's grace… ~ And so I run ~ And so I care ~ And so I share ~ And so I praise His name for His goodness!

Running Through My Mind......

I've been blessed with so many wonderful opportunities in my life. God has allowed me to be a part of things that glorify Him that are beyond measure. He has directed my path to places that I never thought I could go. He has chosen me to do things that I never thought I could do. I am humbled by His goodness and grace!

As I write this, many thoughts are running through my mind. We have a major event coming up in May and the days are clicking away really, really fast! My training for GRACERUNNER JOURNEY is going well as I continue to build my mileage toward our quest to complete 413 miles in 10 days to the glory of God! Please pray for me as I increase my mileage and as the training hits a level of intensity that I cannot comprehend before our taper starts about May 1. Your prayers mean so much to me and your words of encouragement keep me focused and moving forward.

It would be less than truthful for me to say that I'm not worried about funding for our event. I know that God will provide for the things we need. I also know that it is my job to try to raise the needed funds. We really need help in this area -- fundraising has not gone as well as it should be going. I know that some people will wait until the last minute or donate an amount per mile after I complete the journey on May 21. However, the significance of fundraising finally hit me last night when a contributor asked me, "With all the good that TEAM 413 is doing, why in the world will more people not help you with contributions?" I had NO answer because I have no idea! I lay awake most of the night thinking about that simple question. "Why?"

Today has been a real struggle for me because I couldn't get that question out of my mind and off of my heart. I asked friends their opinion and some told me that it was because of folks financial situation right now. Others told me that some people are so apathetic that they don't want to give their time and money even if it is for a good cause. Others told me to hang in there and that it would come in God's timing.

One person's response troubled me. They wrote to me to let me know that someone told them that all TEAM 413 does is sell the shirts that are a catalyst for conversations during a race. My response to this is that person has no concept of what we are doing because they don't follow us very well. If they did follow us, they would know that we spend countless hours talking to folks at events all across the country -- answering emails about the ministry -- sharing Christ with people at speaking events from coast to coast -- and so much more. The depth of this ministry is deeper than anyone can imagine and our reach is across the worldwide running community. People are accepting Christ through the witness of the wonderful people who make up TEAM 413. Just a shirt? I don't think so!

The second question that my friend has been asked is, "Why is TEAM 413 doing a fundraiser that involves giving to other non-profits?" Well, that answer is easy....We want to give back to people who need our help. We want to expand our ministry to unique causes and expose those causes to the people within our ministry. Jesus taught us to enlarge our territory to His glory! That's exactly what we are doing because we are commanded to do so. So, if helping others keep someone from giving to TEAM 413 or GRACERUNNER JOURNEY, that's just the way it will have to be. That's not my problem. That's something that a person needs to take up with God.

If you are interested in being a part of a ministry that is making a difference one person at a time while sharing common ground out on the roads of life, TEAM 413 is your ministry! If you want to be a part of something that is much bigger than yourself and that has the potential to affect millions of people in the endurance-athlete community one person at a time, TEAM 413 is your ministry. And, lastly if you want to be a part of an "outside of the box ministry" that believes that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life -- TEAM 413 may just be a great spot for you to serve.

I SAW GOD TODAY!

I've heard a song -- "I SAW GOD TODAY" -- somewhere in the recesses of my mind on a radio station somewhere! Yet, today -- I saw God through the beauty of a day, in the eyes of a teenager, and through every step I took on my third long run in as many days.

We are on spring break at the beaches of South Walton County, FL along beautiful Highway 30A. Today was a post card type of a day. Today was a picture that you put on a magazine cover kind of day. Today was a chamber of commerce commercial day. The sky was my favorite color. It was a cobalt blue sky day. The sun was warm on my skin but the cool breeze still refreshed. The water of the Gulf of Mexico was blue and green and mixtures of the two! It was the kind of day that makes me want it to stay this way! I saw God today in the beauty of His creation!

As I ran on the path of Highway 30A, a group of teenagers came by me on bikes. Obviously on spring break, they seemed to be having a great time. There must have been 8 or 10 of them and all of them spoke as they went by. "Good day! How are you today!" Well mannered kids -- but the last two stopped as they went by me. And, one of them said, "Hey, I really love your shirt! Philippians 4:13 is my favorite verse because I think that I really can do anything with His strength."

I stopped my GPS watch and talked to them for a moment. The others waited patiently as we talked. I told this young man that I appreciated his boldness -- his love of the Lord -- for being unashamed! He asked me about TEAM 413 and I shared the information and website with him. He was very interested and said he would check it out. Then, they started to leave and he turned to me and said, "God bless you and have a great day!" My response -- "He just did and I will!" This young man was most likely 15 or 16 years old. I wish that I could talk to his mom and dad because I know that they must be proud of such a fine son. The bottom line -- I saw God in the eyes and words of a young man who has been raised right! God bless you, Michael!

Three days of long runs in a row can seem almost insurmountable. But, God gave me the strength to finish the drill as I prepare for GRACERUNNER JOURNEY. He opened the windows to my soul and shared glimpses of His goodness and grace all along my path. He showed me the hardships that will come, things that I need to deal with, and how my training is paying off. He uncovered many things for me today and many of them had nothing to do with running at all. I saw God today in so many different ways during my sojourn along the Florida Panhandle and I can't wait to see how He shows up to teach me new lessons in the days and weeks ahead.

Get on board with us folks -- It's going to be a great adventure!

VISION OF MY HEART

The past few months have been such an unbelievable time for me. The opportunity to prepare for GRACERUNNER JOURNEY had been such a mixed bag of feelings for me. During many hours of training to run 413 miles in 10 days to glorify God, I've had moments of joy, anguish, reality, contemplation, survival, and success. I posted the following quote on my Facebook wall a few days ago:

"Running has become so much more than an athletic endeavor for me. It is a time of worship - my quiet time with God - a time of reflection - a prayer opportunity with no outside distractions. Running is much more than it once was to me because God used it to improve the vision of the eyes of my heart."

I have found much peace in the time that I've spent alone with God as I've been running on trails, roads, and on the treadmill. I've had much time to praise God through the music that I listen to when I workout. It's been called my "GRACERUNNER Playlist!" Many of the song themes have something to do with God's grace....amazing grace - there is a place called grace - His grace is sufficient - grace that is greater than all my sin - abundant grace - delivered by grace.

I am in awe of how God has changed me through this simple act of running. I stand in amazement of how God has shaped and molded my heart so that I can see the vision of this goal in my mind but also deep within my heart of hearts. I am so humbled to do something this significant for the Kingdom. For, I am a simple guy, an average man who is blessed by God's unmerited favor. I am not sure why God has planted this vision within my heart but I do know that He has big plans ahead as we embark on our journey.

We have much work left to be done. So, we ask that you pray for us as we continue this path that God has planned for us. Join me in praying that people all around the world will be touched by something during our journey. Please pray that God will enlarge our territory and that we will be given many opportunities to share Him with the people we come in contact with along our way.

I ask that you continue to pray for our efforts as we raise funds for GRACERUNNER JOURNEY. My prayer is that we'll really be able to help our wonderful charities: TEAM 413, The Dick Beardsley Foundation, Constructores Para Cristo, and The Great Circle. We continue to seek sponsors who are willing to help us as we move forward. If you know of folks who are a good fit, please let me know.

Please pray for our crew. My wife, Kiki, will be my crew chief and will need uncommon patience and wisdom along the way. In addition, we are putting together an all-star crew who will be able to push me to "finish the drill." This will be a live changing experience for all of us and I thank God for the opportunity to serve alongside wonderful people.

Dreams and Vision = Opportunity

Our ambassadors have represented TEAM 413 and shared their faith in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and more than 20 countries all over the world.

Every once in a while I just have to be transparent regarding the needs of our ministry. I have always been somewhat uncomfortable to ask people for financial support but, I've had to learn that it is my responsibility to God and to the ministry of TEAM 413. I have to share my heart because it is just the way I am -- open, up front, and honest about what I see and feel.

This week we learned that we have a wonderful opportunity to be an official charity for the Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon in Nashville on April 30. I scheduled a call with one of the charity department representatives at Competitor Group and was excited to learn that the things we had to do were minimal to make this happen. What a tremendous opportunity we have to be involved in this manner with a such a great event! It also appears that we will have the same opportunity for the Virginia Beach Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon and the San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon.

I posted status updates on all three of our Facebook pages, placed an announcement on our webpage, and sent out an email blast to several hundred people. Three days later we have a few people who has committed to helping us. Our deadline for signing on to be an official charity is Friday, February 25. At that time, TEAM 413 needs 20 people who are committed or we cannot do this. It would not be appropriate or fiscally responsible for me to place our ministry in this situation without reaching the minimum number prior to accepting a spot as an official charity.

Over the past few years, thousands of people have expressed interest in helping our ministry. They have told me to call on them if we ever need help. So, I'm asking that many of you step forward and help us as we write this new chapter in our history. In order to advance forward as a ministry and to make an impact on lives all over the world, this is something that we must do.

The commitment for helping in our fundraising efforts for this event are minimal. TEAM 413 will pay your entry fee for the race of your choice in Nashville. If you have already registered, you will receive a refund or we will decrease your fundraising amount accordingly. The minimal amount that we have set to raise for this event is $500 per runner/fundraiser.

We trust that God will be faithful to deliver what He sees fit for the ministry. It's not in our hands any longer -- we simply have to hand it all over to Him. It is all up to HIM!

2,299 Hours and Counting

It's February 5 and we are 95 days (2,299 hours) away from the start of GRACERUNNER JOURNEY - 10 days - 413 miles - ONE goal, to Glorify God! We still have a lot of training to do and much logistical work to accomplish. We need your support both financially and at the running venues along our path. As of today, this is our schedule:

May 12 - Homewood, AL (Lakeshore Greenbelt Trail)

May 13 - Pontotoc, MS and Memphis, TN

May 14 - Springfield, MO (Bass Pro Shops Complex)

May 15 - St. Louis, MO (Forest Park)

May 16 - Champaign, IL and Chicago, IL (Lake Michigan Trail)

May 17 - Des Moines, IA

May 18 - Duluth, MN (Lake Superior Trail)

May 19 - 21 - Fargo, ND (Local Park & Marathon Course)

We need help at each venue with logistics. Our plan is to set up a staging area with our RV at local "running" parks along our journey. We need local volunteers from each city to do some leg work for us to check on what we need to do to get permission to park our RV at these locations and to alert local media of our cause and journey. We'll be at each site for approximately 12 hours.

My plan is to run smaller loops so that I'll be able to replenish fluids, food, etc. along the way. It will also allow local folks to come out and run with me for a few miles. Kiki, my wife, will be our crew chief and will be at the RV with TEAM 413 & GRACERUNNER JOURNEY gear, my books, posters, and other gear. Folks will also have an opportunity to contribute to our cause while we are in their city. After the day is completed, we hope to hang out for an hour or so with the local group or have a speaking engagement in that city. Then, we'll be off to the next location.

From a planning perspective, this is a huge undertaking especially since we don't have anyone who does this as their job. We are totally volunteer led and have to plan in the evenings and on weekends. So, we need your help in each city. If you live in one of the cities along our journey, we simply ask that you contact us via email at chris@team413.org and let us know how you will be willing to help. If you know great running venues in your area that are better than the ones we have listed above, please let us know. If I haven't listed a location beside a city, it's because we are still looking for the right spot.

We ask that you consider a pledge to our cause which will help TEAM 413 and three other charities. We'll be raising funds for The Dick Beardsley Foundation, Constructores Para Cristo, and The Great Circle. Each of these charities is worthy of your donations. We chose each of them because we believe in the people who are involved and because of their work and mission. Over the past few days we have raised several thousand dollars. We have received personal and corporate pledges and sponsorships. Some folks are giving in memory or honor of a loved one. Others are giving just because they believe in what we are doing.

Miami 2011 -- Three Stories of God's Grace

There are several stories that stood out to me about the 2011 ING Miami Marathon. Below are three stories of God's grace that grabbed my attention and held my heart!

Running Forward to Share it Forward!

I was in amazement at her words as she told me the story of a change in her heart. I saw the tears well up in her eyes because of the impact that that moment in time had on her soul.

She stopped by the TEAM 413 booth at the 2011 ING Miami Marathon and quietly looked at the shirts. I approached her to see if I could help – she began to tell me her story. Her husband stood by silently but with a smile and twinkle in his eyes. Last December she was running the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville, Alabama. Her goal was to qualify for the Boston Marathon. As she ran she happened upon a man running under the name TEAM 413 – wearing our shirt emblazoned with “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” on the back. She ran behind him for a while and then as she came up beside him, she told him that the message had been so significant to her on that day that if she qualified for Boston, she would be wearing a TEAM 413 shirt in her next events. She qualified for Boston on that day with 35 seconds to spare!

Now, on January 29, 2011 she was standing in our booth making plans to live up to her promise to the man who helped her get through that race. Even more importantly, it was a promise to herself to be a witness to someone else – to be hope for someone’s hurting heart – to be a billboard of grace out on her journey. She selected the shirt that she wanted and we talked for quite some time. Her husband told of how God had changed their lives through working with children in camps near their home.

These folks were amazing people who had made plans to pay if forward and share forward so that others could see Christ in them! I believe that she got her opportunity at the marathon on Sunday. I can’t wait to hear!

Just a shirt story? I think not – it was one more step in changing another person’s life through the simple message of the verse that God breathed into reality and placed on a simple running shirt.

Awake and Asleep!

On race morning I walked from my hotel on Miami Beach to the Convention Center to catch a ride to the start line in downtown Miami. It was a little over a mile to the shuttle area, but it was easier than trying to find a parking place!

My route took me along Highway A1A or the main drag of Miami Beach. At 3:45 AM that place was still hoppin! Clubs were open. Restaurants were open. I even heard a couple tell the hostess that they needed a table for two for dinner at one of the outdoor patio restaurants! Everyone was dressed to the max and there I was in my running attire walking to catch a shuttle for a race! I had been asleep and woke up to an alarm at 3:00 AM and these folks hadn’t been to bed yet!

I thought that it was an oddity that all these people were still up and showed no sign of going home soon. But, I’m certain they looked at me in the same way. What’s that guy doing? Where is he going? Why’s he dressed like that? Uncertainty had to cross their mind because I am CERTAIN that they didn’t know that a marathon was taking place in a couple of hours! After all, they would be in bed when we started and when we finished.

I wasn’t sure what lesson I had learned from my journey of the early morning. I usually have some analogy to make that can pull it all together but I’ve been having a hard time with this one until just now while I’m 35,000 feet over somewhere in the southeast flying home to Birmingham.

It finally came to me – their clocks must have been wrong! My mom once told me that not too many good things happened if you were out after midnight. Maybe their mama didn’t tell them. They could have been sleep walking like many of us were at the start of our race. Or, maybe they were just like a lot of the marathoners who got up early on a Sunday morning, put on their running shoes and gear, pinned their number on, and went for a run with several thousand people. Maybe they were running to or from something just like many of us who are runners. Maybe they were searching for something that seems unattainable or running from something that they can’t outrun. Maybe we are alike after all.

At many of my speaking engagements and in much of my writing I tell people that they don’t have to run to or from anything because Jesus Christ is the answer to all their needs. If we are running a real or “mythical 3:00 AM” marathon of life, He is all we need. We don’t have to search any longer – we simply have to ask Him to come into our hearts. Then, we carry Him everywhere we go because He is within us and He runs in front of us, behind us, to our right and to our left, above and below us. He is there to protect us from the enemy and give us hope for a future that we cannot imagine. Seek Him and you will find Him. Call on Him and He will come. Believe in Him – accept Him and He will change your life for all eternity. He is the answer to all your needs!

Brotherhood

Mark Pratt is a man of God! Originally from Jamaica, now living in the Miami area, Mark is my Facebook friend and brother in Christ. I met him last year at the Miami Marathon where he bought my book and has now shared it with many of his friends. He can even recite many of the stories that I write about so, I know he read it! Mark came to our booth at the expo to visit and to seek words of “wisdom” from me (if you can call it that) as he was about to run his first full marathon. We talked about a lot of things including nutrition, hydration, walk breaks, and so much more. He left with a little more confidence that he could get the job done. Later that evening, he posted a thank you on my Facebook site and I had a feeling that he was going to do great.

As is my custom, I got to the start line of the race on Sunday morning very early. I like to have time to sort through all of the weekend – to take in the words of people all around me – and to talk to our TEAM 413 folks who I bump into along their way to run the race.

This race started in the darkness of the early morning at about 6:15 AM. In Miami you run over the Causeway across Biscayne Bay on a trek to Miami Beach. In the darkness of this early morning, the cruise ships were lit up and then the glimmer of the sunrise hit the sky! It was a glorious site of God’s creation. Absolutely spectacular!

As I ran over the causeway taking in all of the sites, Mark ran up beside me and tapped me on the shoulder. The odds of this happening were huge – but, to God, it was planned. We ran along together for several miles and I encouraged him to increase his pace and keep moving forward. We parted ways as I wished him God speed as he continued his step by step journey to complete his goal.

Then, at about mile 12 of the race we ran into each other again – and at the split of the half and full marathon I had a chance to pray that God would bless this wonderful man of God. I made my turn toward the finish and saw Mark move his way to a distance that would be new to him with the knowledge that he would glorify God in every step that he took.

Late on Sunday I checked the results of the race and he had finished the drill – he had run the race set before him! He accomplished the dream that God had planted in his heart! I am proud of you, Mark! Keep rockin’ your runs for Christ! God speed, my friend!

2011 ING Miami Marathon

We are looking forward to being back in Miami for the 2011 ING Miami Marathon on January 28 - 30! TEAM 413 will have a booth at the expo at the South Beach Convention Center and I will be speaking at the ING Runner's Nation Lounge at 5:00 PM on Friday and Saturday. My topic is "The GRACERUNNER Journey." We hope to see many of you at the expo or at my presentations.

We also have a request to make. Through the years many folks have asked to volunteer with TEAM 413 at events all across the country. They have told me that they wanted to help in any possible way that they can. That being the case, we have an opportunity for volunteers at the ING Miami Marathon Expo on Friday and Saturday. We need some help at the expo. I've posted this on my Facebook sites for the past couple of days and have not heard from anyone. So, I'm writing my request in this edition of GRACERUNNER JOURNAL in hopes that someone will notice.

We need a couple of people to help at the TEAM 413 expo booth on Friday and Saturday for a few hours. The times that we most need help is from about 2:00 - 6:00 PM each day. Working an expo is a "blessing" type of event -- you have the chance to share with hundreds of people who stop by our booth. You have the unique opportunity to learn about TEAM 413's impact on people from the inside out! To be a part of this miracle of grace that God has given us through Christ is something that you'll cherish. Individuals who have helped us in the past, walk away from the experience with a new found respect for what God is doing through this simple ministry that we call TEAM 413.

2011 Walt Disney World Marathon Expo - TEAM 413 in Lower Right Corner

The Walt Disney World Marathon Expo Days 1 and 2 have been fantastic for TEAM 413. We've met so many wonderful people and renewed friendships from days gone by. We've had the good fortune to have volunteers help us at this great event. Terry and Jackie Greer, Bobby Cavette, and Art Erdman have been a wonderful help to Kiki and I as we have shared the message of TEAM 413 with thousands of people.

But, one person has gone far and above what is expected. My buddy and TEAM 413 Ambassador, Paul Dillmuth, not only has been a volunteer in the booth, but for the second year in a row, he donated the funds necessary for us to rent booth space at this world class event. That's service! That's belief in our ministry! That's allowing God to work through you to plant seeds of hope for multitudes of people from all over the world! Thanks, Paul, for making Disney a reality for TEAM 413!

Off to bed now, Mickey wakes the half-marathoners up early around here. Wake-up call at 3:00 AM and then start the race at 5:30 AM! Day one of my place called "running" the Goofy Challenge begins in earnest in the AM!

Running is a Place!

Wednesday, January 5, 2011 -- 10:30 PM: We are at 35,000 feet flying to Orlando, Florida for the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. It's our third year to represent TEAM 413 at this world class event. Each year it becomes bigger and better and TEAM 413's message is shared with thousands of new people. It has become the most significant annual fundraiser for TEAM 413.

But, the story started in Orlando some eight years ago when I ran the Disney Marathon for the first time. It was at a time in my life when things weren't going well with my health and my life as I knew it was about to crumble around me. I believe that god was preparing to be stronger than I ever thought that I could be. It was a life changing event and the "push" that helped start this ministry that we call TEAM 413. The land of Mickey Mouse helped change my life forever through God's favor and grace. I look back at that time in my life and see that God was at work to help mold and shape me into the 52-year-old kid that I am today.

I cannot adequately describe what happened back in 2003 well enough to do the story justice. I can say that without a doubt that it was a miracle of God's goodness and grace. It was a time when God got my attention through the circumstances in my life and prepared me for what was ahead. It was a time of much pain of the body, mind, and spirit. But, out of my agony came growth and a ministry that has touched thousands of people worldwide! I am so honored and humbled that God chose me to represent Him in this venue we call running.

You see, running is not an exercise to me. It is a PLACE! Running is as viable a place as my home, my office, or any of my daily surroundings. It's a place where God works in my life and has brought about change that can only be described as miracles of grace! Running is a place called grace to me. Running is my habitat for sanity. Running is my quiet corner of my heart's sanctuary where I am close to God. Running is my place of refuge, of solace, of climate change for my soul. It is a God filled place where HE does His wondrous work.

I love running -- I love that place! More importantly, I love the fact that God dwells in me and comes along with me to this place where He does much work in my heart!

The Goofy Challenge at the Walt Disney event will be a wonderful place for me this weekend! Running the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday will be a place of truth -- a place of worship -- a place of achievement -- a place for living -- a place for loving -- a place for laughter! This place will be my time with God this weekend and I look forward to feeling His grace as He does a good work in me!

2011 - Wow!

Wow! It's hard to believe that 2010 is almost over! It's been a great year for TEAM 413 and we are looking forward to a bunch of outstanding events in 2011.

To finish 2010 strong, I am throwing out a TEAM 413 CHALLENGE. We need a lot of folks to make TEAM 413 run efficiently and effectively. We need people to give end-of-the-year financial contributions to our ministry. The goal is to raise $2,500 before January 1.

This goal should be an easy task considering it will take very little from each of you to get it done! We ask you to STEP UP and give to help us move forward under God's grace!

Jesus Ran!

The following is an excerpt from my book,
GRACERUNNER - FAITH ON THE RUN.

JESUS RAN

I believe that Jesus RAN. God the Father told Jesus that we needed him. Jesus responded that He was willing to run the race and so He ran! He ran out the gates of Heaven to the start line on this earth. He ran the race of human life as He lived with us for more than 30 years. He ran with all types of people. He ran with the rich and the poor. He ran with people of different cultures. He ran with the sick, injured, and downtrodden. He ran alongside mankind and experienced the tough challenges of the miles and miles of life. He felt the pain that we feel. He saw the things that we see. He was a part of the human race.

Then the Father said that we needed Christ even more. So, Jesus ran up Mount Calvary with a cross on His back. He allowed us to nail Him to the cross and to make fun of Him. He still loved us even though we turned our backs on Him. In the end, He looked into all of our eyes and said to us, “If I cannot love you, I cannot love another because YOU are the love of my life!”

He ran for each of us and then He finished the race on this earth and declared, “IT IS FINISHED!” He stayed in the grave for three days and then He ran out of the tomb. He ran back to Heaven and told the Father of the race. He told Him how He ran the same course that we run. He became our advocate. He told His Dad that He understands us now. I believe that Jesus still runs to the Father each time we do the things that please Him. I can hear Him ---

“LOOK FATHER! ANOTHER SEED HAS BEEN PLANTED! ANOTHER LIFE HAS BEEN WON! THEY DID A GOOD JOB!”

Jesus runs for you! He came running to us through mercy and grace. He ran from the start to finish so that He could live on common ground with us.

The results of our earthly marathon will not be posted until the day when Christ runs back for us. Make it your goal to finish life strong so that your results will be posted and the FATHER and the SON will say, “Well done my good and faithful servant! You ran the race and finished strong! Welcome HOME!”

Yearning to Learn - St. Jude Marathon Weekend

Celebrating after the St. Jude Half Marathon with Terry Greer and Ed Pierson

The St. Jude Marathon weekend was great in so many ways for TEAM 413. This is such an outstanding event because it's all about the kids. The smiling faces of kids who are facing unimaginable health issues in their young lives really grab my heart!

Mark Eldridge was our "go to" guy this past weekend --- setting up the booth --- taking care of the logistical matters for the event --- and being the official representative for TEAM 413 for two days. THANK YOU, Mark! Your contribution to TEAM 413 is immeasurable and I thank God for you each day! Terry Greer, Faye Powell, and Sharon Pierson also helped at the expo and I am so blessed to serve alongside such wonderful ambassadors!

Although I was only at the expo for a few hours, I was able to visit with quite a few people on Friday afternoon and evening.

Pat, my friend from Rhode Island, was once again a blessing. She has been a steadfast supporter for several years and it was great to see her once again. Pat always thanks me for my words on our website or in GRACERUNNER Journal. She is a nurse and has read my ramblings for several years as she works the late, late night shift. It has always meant a lot to me that she has found our words worthy of her time. Thanks, Pat for believing in us and supporting our ministry from far away. You are awesome.

One remarkable story stood out for me during the expo. Lisa came by to buy a shirt -- a black shirt with yellow writing. I asked her about the color and she explained to me that those were the colors of the gym where she had worked out to lose over 100 pounds! I could tell that she was so very proud of her hard work. I gave her one of my books and personalized it for her -- tears welled up in her eyes. She had come so far and on this day, I wanted her to know that she could do anything. She is a living testimony of God's amazing grace!

During the race we ran through the St. Jude campus. I came upon a group of kids yelling and cheering for the runners. As I ran by, I stopped and thanked them -- I had about a dozen of our TEAM 413 wristbands strapped onto my Spybelt and gave one to each of them. But, I was short one wristband! The little guy at the end of the line had been left out --- but, then one of the older kids spoke up and said, "Hey, you take mine!" and then turned to me and said, "Thank you, sir!" It was not just an act of kindness. It was an act of self-less kindness! It touched my heart.

We can learn so much from the people I write about above. We can learn about facing the challenge ahead of us and attacking it with a great attitude from the kids of St. Jude. We can learn service and dedication from Mark Eldridge and our TEAM 413 Ambassadors. We can learn about being supportive of a ministry from Pat. We can learn about commitment and will-power from Lisa. And, lastly we can learn about being self-less from the young boy at the St. Jude campus.

These people made me question myself and now I question each of you. How is your attitude when you approach life challenges? When was the last time you served? When was the last time you were supportive? When was the last time that you had the will-power of Lisa? When was the last time you gave up something that you wanted in order to give it to someone else? When was the last time that you were self-less?

We are currently working on the logistics of such a site. It will either be a website dedicated to the event or a fundraising page similar to our active.com site that we currently use. Blessings for Thanksgiving

On this Thanksgiving Day and every day -- I am thankful for:

My wife, Kiki, who loves me without condition and who keeps me young at heart. I never knew that life could be so good and I have never felt so loved!

Two daughters, Morgan and Ashley, who would make any dad proud and have brought so much joy to my life. And, for Ashley's husband, Donald, who is a son-in-law that I would be proud to call my own son.

Kiki's kids, Gerrit and Hanna, who I love as if they were my own. They have a bright future ahead and I am so blessed to have them in my life.

My late mom and my dad for instilling Christian intensity into my character – so that I would make the decision to accept Christ as my Savior!

My family – friends – students – peers.

But most of all, I am thankful for Jesus Christ, who is has molded me to be His servant!

God has truly been so good to me. Sure I've had bad times -- rough times -- tumultuous times in my life. However, God has blessed me beyond measure! His mercy, grace, love and care are enough!

Let everything that has breath, praise the LORD!

Come Run With Me!

My training for GRACERUNNER JOURNEY is well underway. I have significantly ramped up my weekly mileage over the past couple of months. I am doing speed work (speed is relative -- you can stop laughing now!), a medium long run, and a tempo run during the week. Then, I am completing a long run on the weekend. Yesterday was my long run day and I knocked out 23.4 miles - it feels great to get things really kicked off!

As many of you know, GRACERUNNER JOURNEY will be a ten day -- eight city event that will take place in May. On May 12 - 21, I will run (complete) 413 miles. The finish line of the Fargo Marathon will be the completion of the 413 miles. Our "tag" line for the event is "One Man, 10 days, 413 miles, 1 goal! To Glorify God!" This journey will also be used to raise funds for TEAM 413 - GRACERUNNER Ministries, The Dick Beardsley Foundation, Constructores Para Cristo, and The Great Circle Boys and Girls Town of Springfield, Missouri. Here's a little information about these groups:

The Dick Beardsley Foundation is an organization led by my friend, Dick Beardsley, and his wife, Jill. The mission of the foundation it to assist those suffering from chemical dependency receive the treatment they need; speak to youth in schools and treatment centers across the world about leading a healthy, active lifestyle chemically free; and to educate the general public on the disease of chemical dependency. Our goal is to help them as they strive to help others.

Constructores Para Cristo is another organization we have chosen to help along our journey. Constructores Para Cristo is committed to helping the people of Piedras Negras, Mexico break the cycle of poverty by providing housing, health care, and educational opportunities. This organization has built homes, medical facilities, and schools in order to accomplish their mission. It is amazing to see what God has done through this wonderful organization and we are blessed to be a small part of their cause.

Great Circle - Boys and Girls Town of Springfield, Missouri is an organization that holds a very special place in my heart. I have been able to speak to this group of kids and the staff and was moved in a way that I cannot adequately describe in words. Our goal is to help them achieve their mission which is to reshape vulnerable lives through a community of partners, teachers and leaders, giving children and families the confidence to create bright futures. I look forward to being a part of this group for many years to come.

To accomplish our goal of completing 413 miles in ten days, we need your support.

First of all, we need your prayers and I'm asking you to commit to praying for GRACERUNNER JOURNEY each day. Please pray that God will give us the strength, fortitude, and mental toughness to get the job done. And, please pray that God will be glorified during each step of this challenge.

Secondly, we need your logistical support and we need people to be on-site at each stage of our journey. We'll be running at venues in Birmingham, Memphis, Springfield, St. Louis, Champaign/Urbana, Chicago, Des Moines, Duluth, and Fargo. In each city, we'll set up camp at a park where there is a running trail. We're asking many of you to help my wife, Kiki, who will be our crew chief, to make sure that we have the things we need at each site. I'm also challenging many of you to come out and run a few miles with me at each stage. The goal is to run about 45 miles per day for the first eight days, 26.8 miles on day 9, and then finish the event with the 26.2 miles at the Fargo Marathon on May 21. I'll need help from my brothers and sisters in Christ to finish this drill! So, please come run with me!

Lastly, we need your financial support. An event like this cannot take place without significant contributions. Plus, we are raising funds for four worthy causes. We have a financial goal but I simply do not want to place limitations on God -- so, we are not going to publish the goal. God Rocked San Antonio!

Throughout the past eight years a lot of expos and running events have raced by ... sometimes the moments run together. There are times when I just can't remember some of the special moments that we share with the people, places, and things that come our way to shape and mold our heart along our TEAM 413 journey. But, sometimes those moments are as clear as a crisp, cobalt blue sky fall day! And so it was at the San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Marathon weekend.

God has a unique way of grabbing your attention at moments when you least expect it -- two of those times stand out in my mind from this past weekend in San Antonio.

He waited for a few minutes while I was talking to someone else. Then, when I was free he approached me and told me that he was compelled to tell me his story. Joe and I talked for quite some time and I learned that this would be his first half marathon and that he had lost 170 pounds! I was so moved by his story that I gave him a copy of my book and he also got a TEAM 413 shirt to wear on race day.

That evening I received an email from Joe. He wrote, "I came home and have read through about 7 chapters (of your book) so far, and look forward to finishing it. I am very excited about being able to wear your shirt not only during Sunday's race, but also in the gym as a ministry tool to spread the incredible change that God has made in my life and He wants to make in theirs. We did not have a lot of time to chat tonight, but one thing I tell people when sharing with them about my weight loss is that it is an exterior sign of the internal change that has taken place in me. God is great, and seeing this formerly 420+ lb. man cross the finish line will be a testament of his power to change lives." Wow! That was a strong testimony!

Then on Sunday evening I received another email from Joe. "Today was amazing for me, ran a PR for 10 miles, then unfortunately experienced some cramping. Learned a valuable lesson in electrolyte management. But, I wanted to let you know that the shirt was a real blessing to me in more than one way. The first 8 or 9 miles I may have only seen 2 of them (other TEAM 413 runners), but I received a bunch of compliments on it, and it reminded me why I was doing what I was doing. Then in the last couple miles, when I was in pain, I was surrounded by people wearing the TEAM 413 shirts and it really helped me push through to finish even though it was not the pace that I had hoped for due to calf cramping. It was a real honor to wear that shirt, and was just what I wanted while doing this. This is just one more amazing part of my testimony."

Joe is really a testimony of God's amazing grace! He made a decision to change -- to turn and go the other direction in his life. Now, he is doing things that he could have never imagined. What a blessing he will be to people who hear his story! What a blessing he is to me! God bless you, Joe!

As the crowd filled the expo on Saturday our booth became very crowded. We were talking to people from all over the country. Most of them had heard of TEAM 413 but there were others who stopped by to check us out. The day was going at a frantic pace and then time stood still as I noticed a lady pick up my book and flip through it. I asked her if I could help and she told me that she would like to get a copy -- I asked her about signing the book and who I should "personalize" the message to. She told me that it was for her son and went on to tell me that they had lost their other son and the family was running in his memory.

As we talked, I asked her how the son was doing who I was signing the book for. She went on to tell me that he was strong and that God was seeing him through the difficult times. I asked her how she was doing and, through her tears, she told me that she was doing OK. I signed the book for the son and handed it to the mom. She started to hand me money for the book but I just couldn't take it .... I told her to tell her son that this one was on me. She began to cry and her husband and I comforted her -- I promised them that I would pray for them as they ran for Taylor on Sunday.

There is no way that anyone can understand how a mom or dad feels after losing a child unless they've been there before. I could not imagine it -- But, this lady -- her husband -- and her son were standing strong for their departed loved one. They were keeping his memory alive through running this race. They were going to finish this race for him! I saw God in their eyes! I saw hope that only God could give -- I saw strength that one can only gain through Christ -- I saw joy in the knowledge that Taylor was sitting at the feet of Jesus in Heaven! I had no words -- I could not talk for a few minutes -- I was moved to tears and moved deep within my heart because these folks allowed Christ to "show through" in the midst of circumstances that I cannot comprehend. Only God's grace is sufficient for what this family is going through and I know He will see them through because of their deep faith and unstoppable love!

Before the expo opened on Friday I told someone that despite being placed in a spot in the expo that was less than desirable, that God's word would not be ignored! God would bring people our way and rock our world just like He does every weekend that we travel with TEAM 413. Looking back, I was right because I handed it over to God. People did find us -- folks did share stories of God's amazing grace -- and His word was not ignored! Living proof was all over the marathon course on Sunday -- God rocked His word all along the streets of San Antonio in celebration of His Son who rolled the rock away and lives in the hearts of many who ran under His grace and finished the race before them!

OFF THE HOOK!

This past weekend we had a great time at the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor Fitness Festival in Springfield, Missouri. We hosted our first ever TEAM 413 Weekend as a part of this outstanding weekend. Several of our TEAM 413 Ambassadors and friends met us for "shirt story" times on Friday and Saturday evening. The stories of God's goodness and grace grabbed my heart and increased my desire to move TEAM 413 forward more than ever! It was a special time of celebration! God bless all of you who attended!

The Bass Pro event is unlike any other that I attend - It is off the hook! Melissa Bondy does an outstanding job putting on this festival which is truly a community wide event. Bass Pro Shops brought their invited speakers in a day early so we could visit with people from across the area. So, we got to town on Thursday afternoon.

Frank Shorter, Dick Beardsley, Bill Rodgers, and I were then taken to several locations to speak -- We spoke to the cross country team at Missouri State University along with high school cross country teams from the region -- we spoke to a group of 7th and 8th graders at Immaculate Conception School -- and we spoke at Boys and Girls Town of Springfield. Then, we all spoke at the pasta dinner on Saturday evening and I led the pre-race worship service on Sunday morning. I have wonderful memories from all of these opportunities and plan to share many of them with you in upcoming editions of GRACERUNNER JOURNAL.

On this journey I will be running 413 miles over the 10 days. The finish line of the Fargo Marathon will mark the end of 413 miles! We are planning and working hard to make this a successful event. My training has started with Jeff Galloway writing a personal training program to help me finish the drill. We'll also be speaking in each city --- details will be posted soon. Our goal is for folks from the community to come out to the venues and run along with me for several miles and to visit with other members of the TEAM 413 family.

We'll be raising funds for TEAM 413 - GRACERUNNER Minsitries, The Dick Beardsley Foundation, Constructores Para Cristo, and Boys and Girls Town of Springfield, Missouri. I'll be sharing profiles of each of these organizations in the days ahead. In addition, we'll have a fundraising page up and running soon and we'll post details on how you can be a part of this journey!

The evening before I finish the 413 mile trek, I'll be speaking at the pasta dinner at the Fargo Marathon. OORAH! 35th Marine Corps Marathon

I've been a part of many athletic events in my life. I've run many races during my time with TEAM 413. I've done a lot of cool things in my life! However, when it comes to memorable times -- a bucket list item -- thrills that will remain in my heart and mind forever --- well, the 35th running of the Marine Corps Marathon was OUTSTANDING!

Everything about the Marine Corps Marathon is top-tier. The expo gave TEAM 413 an opportunity to get in front of so many people. The isles were packed and we talked to countless people. The marathon was one of the highlights of my running life. We ran by so many of the things that I've heard about my entire life. I've run this race before but this was different. This was my first time to really soak it all in....to take time to enjoy the ride!

To run by the monuments of the United States of America, to see the pride in the eyes of Marines, to hear and feel "God, family, country!" created overload in my heart. My race was tough and I had to walk a lot but it didn't take away the beauty of this event. As I ran to the finish, I looked up and saw the Marine War Memorial -- the tears ran down my face -- pride in our country filled my heart -- and I thanked God that I could run in a race like this and share my faith along the way without apology -- with the words "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!" on my back.

We complain about so many things being wrong in the United States. We want more and think others deserve less. We feel as though we are entitled to our piece of the pie. If you want to get over YOURSELF, look into the eyes of a service man or woman who has pride in protecting your freedom! It will change your heart, mind, and soul!

OORAH! to all of the Marines along our path on this day....THANK YOU for your service!

Flying Through Life!

Airports and air travel have always amazed me. I find it so intriguing to watch people. Some are in a hurry -- some are in a tizzy -- some have no clue what to do or where to go -- some act surprised when they suddenly have to get on a plane or show someone an ID. It's funny how unprepared some people are and then how over-prepared others are! I find it amusing to watch all aspects of what happens on the inside and outside of these "meccas" of flight. From the time you get to the building until the time you walk out of your destination airport, it is always an adventure.

We hardly ever pay attention to the miracles that go on around us in and around an airport. We don't stop to notice things like the soldier coming home meeting his family at the airport. We don't marvel at the miracle of thousands of pounds of metal lifting us off the ground and propelling us to another city somewhat akin to a time machine! We don't feel the sense of wonderment that you see in the eyes of a child when they get to look into the cockpit with the pilot or are handed a "wing badge." We miss it because we are in such a hurry and we are consumed with our own wants, wishes, and desires!

We could paint an analogy of life with the things that happen in a airport. We don't care about others enough to slow down just for a moment to ask, "How are you today?" We don't stop and "smell the flowers" of the grand time machine that God has given us --- LIFE! We grow up and lose the faith, simpleness, and hope that only a child can exhibit. We simply go about life with a badge of entitlement pinned to our heart and mind. We want "what we want" and we want it NOW! Everything is too slow -- nothing can keep up with our demands -- if it's yesterday's news, it's not worth anything to us!

I don't believe God wants us to live our lives that way. I believe that He wants us to savor every moment. I think God's desire is for our life to be filled with excitement, challenge, hope, and love. I cannot imagine that God would want us to live our lives as if we "lived" in an airport! So, slow down and be a kid today -- embrace the fullness of God's love around you -- look for hope in the miracles that happen in front of you each and every single day of your life.

Seat backs and tray tables up! Fasten your seat belt! Expect the ride of your life each day -- God wouldn't have it any other way!

An Angel Who Rescued My Heart

From GRACERUNNER - FAITH ON THE RUN - Published January 2010

Just a few short years ago, I had pretty much given up. Even though I knew that God would take care of me, I just couldn't come to grips with what was going on in my life. In my mind, I had lost everything. I had been through a divorce that was devastating. I was suffering with health problems that seemed to worsen by the day. I didn't know how I was going to make it through each day.

Because of my faith, I turned it over to God and asked Him to show me what to do. Then along came Kiki, who is now my wife. She was, without a doubt, an angel sent from God to rescue my heart. Without question, she is one of the primary reasons for the success of TEAM 413.

Kiki is an absolutely amazing person. She is so very sympathetic to other people's feelings. She is empathetic as she tries to understand what others are going through in their personal lives. She is compassionate by doing things for people who will never know she helped. She is the most beautiful person that I've ever known, both inside and out.

I can best describe Kiki as being full of energy, extremely positive, and extraordinarily dedicated. Her energy is contagious. She does everything in her life with a zeal that is a model for all of us. She is upbeat even in tough situations. She keeps her head up, tries to make other people smile, and encourages them with her words in more ways than I can explain.

She is loyal to her family, her friends, her employer, and associates. She simply gets things done and finishes any task that has been entrusted to her. She is a gift and a blessing to many people. She is wonderful!

Everyone who meets Kiki remembers her. At first, I thought it was because of her name. But, it's not. It's because of her smile, her cute squeaky voice, and the way she approaches people. They remember her because her goal is to make someone smile, to make someone laugh, to brighten someone's day, to cheer someone up, to lend a helping hand, to help someone in a time of need, to deliver on a promise.

Kiki is special for so many reasons. She is a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She has a contagious personality that instantly wins you over. She is intelligent, but still sees the world though the eyes of a child. She is in wonderment of God's creation in nature, in people, in life.

Kiki is one of the most talented people that I've ever known. She can do just about anything. She is a gifted athlete. She is a great worker. She can figure out stuff that makes me scratch my head! I love to sit back and tell her that she "can't do something" -- she'll prove me wrong every time because it motivates her. She can do and be anything!

My wife is the most genuine, wonderful person I've ever met. Hold on, did I write that already? Well, she is!!! I am a very lucky man to have her by my side in good and bad times. I am blessed to be graced with her presence each day. I am a better person because God sent her to make my life whole again.

Thank you, Kiki, for loving me, caring for me, and never doubting me! You are an angel!

God Uses the Simple to do the Extraordinary!

"In the midst of the thunderstorms of life, people seek shelter in the hope that only Christ can give. As Christians, we must be there for these people to offer support, love, and a caring heart. We have to allow our faith to show through so others will see Christ in us!"

This past weekend at the IMT Des Moines (Iowa) Marathon I had the privilege of speaking at the expo speakers series. On Saturday afternoon a young lady took her seat as I was about to step up to the microphone to begin my presentation. As I began to share my personal story and the story of the founding of TEAM 413, tears ran down her face. The more I talked about how Christ had been glorified by a simple verse on a simple running shirt all over the world, she began to cry. She eventually composed herself, but she remained somewhat emotional during the entire talk. I was able to speak with her afterwards and learned that she had lost her mom not too long ago and was having a tough time. She was going through a "thunderstorm moment" in her life. She told me that the words of encouragement really helped her. I was moved beyond measure because God had allowed me to help someone in a way that I could not have imagined.

Later that evening I had the honor to introduce the keynote speaker, Jeff Galloway, at the pasta dinner. Jeff and I have been friends for quite some time, but he didn't know the depth of his influence in my life...of how his run-walk-run method had gotten me through virtually every race that I've ever finished. He had never heard my entire story and this was my opportunity to say thanks to him and to introduce my friend, my coach, and the father of the run-walk-run method of training to this audience. When Jeff took the stage he thanked me for the kind introduction and then told the audience that TEAM 413 was making an impact on people all over the world, that we were helping to change people's lives. Once again, I was in awe of God's power -- of how he could use a simple messenger to help spread His good news and now we are accepted by the worldwide running community.

After the pasta dinner, I had the privilege to meet, Stacy Sparks, a cancer survivor who had shared her story at the expo. She introduced herself and we chatted for a bit. She went on to tell me how TEAM 413 folks had helped her get through some races and that she had never stopped by our booth at an expo but was glad the she could meet me one-on-one so that we could share our stories. Once again, I was inspired by someone who God used to lift my heart -- to know that we truly are making a difference.

Finally, on race day, I felt great. I eventually would complete the Des Moines Half Marathon in my fastest time in several years. My time still wasn't great but it was several minutes faster than I've run in a very long time! I was pumped because even though it's not really about the time any longer, I had become somewhat discouraged that I couldn't seem to get over the hump. But on this day, I was able to achieve a little more than I thought I could. God shined down on me on this cobalt blue sky day in Des Moines and I will never forget the people who I met along that journey through the streets of the city.

It's not about me -- It's about Him!"

On Tuesday, October 12, I posted the following quote as my status update:

"I don't run as fast as I once did. I used to care about where I finished a race in my age-group. That stuff is not important anymore. God planted different reasons in my heart. Now, I run to celebrate God's miracle of grace in my life - that I can run against all odds - so Christ will be lifted up through each step I take - so others may see Christ in me. Quite simply, it's not about me -- It's about Him!"

Frankly, I was astounded by the comments, emails, phone calls, and other feedback I got from this simple quote. Some of the comments were:

"Since I have only recently started back running, it is by His grace that I can take the next step, deepening the understanding that His grace is providing each step, not just when running but each and every step throughout the entire day."

"I so agree with this and love it! Just got home from The Chicago Marathon! It was so hot 88 degrees. We have always known our camaraderie was most important, but during this race, it was ever so evident. God's grace was upon us and we were able to extend it to others. We finished hold hand and smiling."

"Your post says it all for me as well, after a knee scope that left me bone on bone and in need of a knee replacement, it is no longer about the time. It's about the fact that with God all things are possible and I can do all through Him, we just have to keep going so others will see this!"

"I had never thought about running with that perspective....thank you for that. It takes a lot to change an attitude. Your post just did."

The thing about this status update that is so amazing is that I had a couple of days off as we were on fall break at Samford University, where I teach. I was on my way out the door for a run when I realized that I had not posted my daily status update. I sat down at my computer and went totally blank! I had no idea what to write! I said a simple prayer, "God, give me words to touch someone today." Those words were what He delivered.

As soon as I finished typing and posting the words, a "like" came up on the screen, then another, then more, then comments! My run was delayed for a few minutes while I responded. I sat on the sofa as I thought about how God had entrusted me with something that belonged to Him. It as a very emotional time -- Possibly one of the most "in tune with God" times that I've ever had.

I eventually walked out the door and my planned 2 hour run turned into 3 hours. My brain was in overdrive and my heart was full of emotion. I thought about all the things that I've been able to do while we've been involved in this thing we call TEAM 413. God gave me thoughts for the future -- a plan for some things that you'll hear about soon -- a clearness of focus that I've longed for.

God's simple words became a sermon to me! It's now a challenge for me to live up to what God expects of me. It has challenged me to do somethings that will be, to say the least, "outside the box."

Hang on folks! The best is yet to come. God is at work in the lives of people all over the world because of His ministry -- TEAM 413. We'll be coming to a town near you soon! Want to be involved? Less is More!

Very few things in my life have been as frustrating as "trying" to raise funds for our non-profit ministry, TEAM 413 - GRACERUNNER Ministries. It's time consuming, tedious, gut wrenching, and yet, still a blessing! Even though very few people actually participate and give to the ministry, those who do are such amazing people and I am a better person because of their impact on my life.

I've found that those with the most, give the least and those with the least, give the most. It's truly an extraordinary thing! The wonderful folks who can least afford it give each month. Every time we need people to step up, they are the ones who give. They never judge us for asking for funds to continue this wonderful ministry, they just participate in our events and tell us that they are praying for us!

God has used those amazing people to touch my life in immeasurable ways. He has taught me many lessons through their steadfast support. God has blessed the dollars that they have given through the years. He has multiplied the gifts to expand His Kingdom!

When I've asked and asked and asked again --- and the dollars don't come in as timely as I think they should, God shows up through one of these folks and blesses my heart.

To those of you who give, thank you so much for having hearts of servant-hood and for believing in our efforts!

Cobalt Blue Sky Day in My Heart!

My run on Sunday, October 3 was supposed to be a normal medium long run. It was not supposed to be "life changing" or anything extraordinary. It was to be an opportunity to log the miles -- to enjoy the coolness of the first crisp fall day of the year -- to finish the week of training with a good run. Plain and simple, I was out to finish the drill -- nothing more, nothing less. God had other ideas!

The clutter of all the "brain chatter" in my head quickly became much, much more. On this run my senses were really awakened for the first time since the spring. Running in the heat during the summer always takes a tremendous toll on my body. And, suddenly on this day, it seemed to be all gone. My legs felt fresh. Me mind became clear. My pace was faster. My breathing was easy. On this day, things changed for me even if for just one day!

I noticed the cool breeze on my face. I saw squirrels celebrating as if they were little kids out playing in the park. Leaves blew across my path for the first time since last fall. But, the biggest thing that caught my attention was the noise that I kept hearing in the distance -- it was the flapping of our American Flag in the wind. This flag atop a pole at the highest point on the running trail at Veteran's Park in Alabaster, Alabama was dancing in the wind. It could be seen and heard from any spot on the trail on this day. When I looked up, it also had the backdrop of a "cobalt blue sky" -- A color that cannot be described adequately except to say that only God could conjure up something so beautiful and breathtaking!

So, here I was running on a "cobalt blue sky day" -- the flapping of the symbol of freedom echoing in my ear -- the wind against my back or in my face -- the freshness of a cool day! It was a snapshot moment in my heart -- a sensory overload that was sorely needed! I had an amazing 10 mile run for my body, mind, heart, and soul!

We live in such a frantic, fast paced world and we rarely slow down to capture the simpleness of the complexity of God! We don't notice the wind, the wildlife, the sky, the coolness of the air, or the freedom we have. We argue the point "in God we trust" but we don't really live like it or appreciate it until someone tells us that they want to take it away from us!

Sunday's run opened my senses in many ways. But, more importantly, it opened my heart to seek His goodness in all of life....to capture the reality of each precious day....to savor the marvelous beauty of His handiwork....to cherish the freedom that I have to live, to love, to worship, to share my faith!

Have you noticed God's "cobalt blue sky day" moments in your life lately. If not, look around. You just might be missing a blessing straight from the heart of God!

GRACERUNNER - FAITH ON THE RUN

My first book, GRACERUNNER - FAITH ON THE RUN, came off the press last week. We sold the book for the first time at the Walt Disney World Marathon Expo in Orlando. We were pleased with the number of books that we signed and sold at our first ever book signing. The feedback on the book has been good and we believe that this book will turn out to be a major fundraiser for TEAM 413 - GRACERUNNER Ministries.

The book is filled with stories of God's grace. I did my best to capture stories of the people, places, and things we have come in contact with during our seven year journey with TEAM 413. Some of the stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry, and some will make you turn your head like a Golden Retriever! God gave me the words of this book as He captured my heart with His goodness. The writing of this book was a labor of love for all of the people who have invested in the lives of others by sharing their faith during their "running" journeys through life.

The cover of the book was designed by my oldest daughter, Morgan. The foreword was written by Dick Beardsley, a legend in the running community. I have dedicated the book to those who have truly made a difference in my life by giving of themselves in order to help me grow. I am very pleased with the final product. Although, I'm certain it is not perfect, I can assure you that it will touch your heart and make you think about what is important in your life.

Self-Less-Ness in Action!

Once in a while you meet someone that truly "gets it!" It feels like they are totally instep with your own dreams, beliefs, and faith. They care about every aspect of your life and you can depend on them in any situation. People like this come along very few times in your lifetime. One of those people who has been so special to Kiki and me is Tonya Williams. Tonya, who is pictured above, is a bundle of energy. She is a personal trainer, fitness instructor, friend to many, and a valuable TEAM 413 Ambassador. By the way, I'm not sure I'd want Tonya to work me out -- might not be able to walk the next day! I believe that her motto is probably "JUST DO IT -- OR ELSE!"

The characteristics that I have noticed most about Tonya are her genuine empathy, sympathy, and compassion for others. She is "self-less" and always puts others first. When Kiki had her knee surgery a few days ago, she wanted to make sure that I kept her posted on how her "sista" was doing. She has become a friend and confidant to us and we cherish her friendship so very much.

Tonya loves to run. She loves to compete. She loves to finish the drill! Yet, she loves the Lord more than anything and is not ashamed to tell anyone. She makes no apologies for her faith in Jesus Christ and she will introduce Him to others at any opportunity that she finds. Her zeal for doing the right thing is contagious. You want to follow her lead because you know that she is going to do the right thing!

One interesting fact about Tonya is that she probably owns the largest collection of TEAM 413 shirts (other than me) in the world. Well, that's not exactly true. The truth is that she has probably owned more shirts than anyone else in the world ONE at a time! She gives them away when someone is hurting -- when someone needs some inspiration -- when someone accomplishes a goal -- or just because she wants to share her faith with someone. Then, she calls Kiki for a replacement or two or three! Tonya is "self-less-ness" in action!

Tonya Williams is a mess, a person who truly "lives" life, a friend, a sister in Christ, and a "sista" on earth. She is one of a kind and we wouldn't want it any other way!

Thanks, Tonya for making us smile -- for cheering us up when we are down -- and for stepping up to serve when you are called upon! To ALL OF US, you are a gift straight from the heart of God!

I'll give it more than anyone!

Kiki Running Like the Wind at 2007 Country Music Marathon

Her knee hurt badly but she didn't say anything when I talked to her upon my arrival in Appleton, Wisconsin for the Fox Cities Marathon on September 16. Then later that evening she called. I could hear the emotion in her voice and the tears were flowing. I was far away from home and my best friend, wife, and the love of my life - Kiki - had hurt her knee while playing tennis. "This time," she said, "it's bad!"

I did my best to comfort her in her pain of the heart and body. She knew that this wasn't good. As a certified athletic trainer for more than 28 years, I was trying to diagnose her injury over the phone. Eventually, I asked her to send me a picture of her knees, side by side, via email. When I got the pictures I saw that she had a lot of swelling and I was concerned about several things that might be going on in that knee. So, I emailed my good friend and world class orthopedic surgeon, Larry Lemak. He called me when he got the email and asked me to send Kiki to his home for him to examine on Saturday, the 18th.

After examining her knee, he scheduled an MRI and eventually surgery for Wednesday, September 22. We arrived at the hospital on that day and after Kiki was taken back to be prepped for surgery, Dr. Lemak met me and took me back to the surgery viewing room so I could watch the surgery. After I had watched the repair and clean-up work he did in her knee through the arthroscopic procedure, Dr. Lemak came back to the room where I was and simply asked, "Did you see that!?"

Kiki's many years of tennis, running, biking, and so much more had taken a toll on her knee. The wear and tear to the knee was significant. She had arthritic changes, a meniscus tear, and defects in the articular cartilage that covers the ends of the bones. Dr. Lemak told me that she would most likely have to do non-load, non-weight bearing sport activities from now on. He knows Kiki but I'm not sure that he knows how driven and tough she is .... so, I'm not betting against her being able to run again!

Regardless, I had to tell her what was going on in her knee. When she returned to her room from surgery, I told her what they had done to her knee and how significant the problem was. She asked me what all that stuff meant .... what would she be able to do? When I told her that she might not be able to run or play tennis competitively again, she began to cry. She was heart broken and her sadness lasted most of that day.

Still, she is tough, stubborn, and has the strongest will of anyone I know. She will out work anyone! So, the idea of her not being able to do the things that she has done all of her life hurt her heart. As is our mantra, "Never allow your circumstances to dictate your character" -- I began to see and hear a change in Kiki over the next couple of days. She told me, "Then, I'll do what I can do to help grow TEAM 413. I'll work just as hard as if I were training for a marathon. I'll give it more than anyone. I don't have to run to minister."

Needless to say, Kiki's words hit me like a ton of bricks. She believes in the ministry of TEAM 413. She has seen the impact that this ministry has had on thousands of people from all over the world. She understands that TEAM 413 is important and that we have to keep moving forward and continue to glorify God in all we do and say. We simply cannot turn around and retreat when things get tough!

Through the years, countless people have told me that they want to be a part of TEAM 413. They tell me that they want to do whatever they can to help us grow. They just want to be a part of this ministry so they can help other people. Yet, when it comes time and they are asked to help, only a handful have lived up to what they have said. Many have had excuses. Others never call or email us back. However, a select few have the same attitude as Kiki. They just ask me to point them in the right direction and they'll get it done!

We need more people with TEAM 413 like Kiki. We need folks who will give their time and resources to help us move forward as a ministry. We need people who love the Lord and will shed tears of joy and sorrow with those of us who are "locked in" on this God thing we call TEAM 413. We need individuals who will do what they say and get on with the business of helping others all across this country. We need people who don't say that they will "believe it when they see it" but will say "I'll SEE it when I BELIEVE it!"

This world would be a much better place if it were filled with people who have a heart of service like my wife -- no complaints -- no whining -- no excuses! Just get it done! It's time for people who want to be a part of TEAM 413 to step up and step out of their comfort zone. We are long over due to accomplish many things and it's time to live up to the standard that Kiki has set!

If you are committed, let's get it done! No excuses any longer! In the words of Kiki:

"I'll do what I can do to help grow TEAM 413. I'll work just as hard as if I were training for a marathon. I'll give it more than anyone!"

Changing Me Through GRACERUNNER QUOTES!

Over a year ago I was very resistant to opening a Facebook account. But, I was encouraged to do so by friends and family. In my wildest dreams I never knew what an impact that page would have on me personally as God has opened a new avenue for me to share my faith, stories of grace, and God given quotes (status updates) each day. My prayer is that these words have changed the way someone thinks, challenged fellow Christians to give of themselves, touched a heart or two, or encouraged those who were going through a difficult time.

Because of many comments from those who follow my Facebook page, the following are my quotes from July 1 - September 26, 2010. The quotes begin with the latest date and go back in time....

Pictures Worth More Than Words!

I am constantly amazed at the growth of our "once" small ministry for marathon runners and other endurance athletes. God has taken a simple ministry and turned it into a worldwide organization that we cannot comprehend. This ministry has touched hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. We are humbled to be part of something so "God sized" with such an impact on so many lives.

I can write much about the people, places, and things that have influenced us over the past few years. But, pictures speak much louder than words! Enjoy the pictures below and join us as we move forward under God's grace!

TEAM 413 - A Project in Progress!

As I write this edition of GRACERUNNER Journal I am somewhere over the heartland of America flying to Chicago for the Chicago Half Marathon Expo and Speaker Series. I find myself traveling again after just getting back from Virginia Beach three days ago --- yet, I feel so blessed to be in this position. God is doing great things with TEAM 413 and I’m always anxious to see what He has in store next.

I’ll be on the road quite a bit this fall -- Appleton, Wisconsin -- Omaha, Nebraska -- Des Moines, Iowa -- Washington, DC -- Springfield, Missouri -- San Antonio, Texas -- Memphis, Tennessee -- and a few more cities along the way. Our 2011 schedule is already in the works as well. We have confirmed that we’ll be going back to Disneyworld, Miami, Seaside, and St. Louis just to name a few. Several years ago, we could only imagine going to a 10 - 15 cities in a year and now God has us traveling from coast to coast – about 40 events per year. Amazing grace in motion!

TEAM 413 has been a grassroots ministry. Many people have given of their time, talents, and dollars to help us continue to move forward. We’re still looking for that elusive corporate partner who will help us reach another level in God’s service. We’re looking for a partner who isn’t afraid of us because of our personal faith and relationship with Jesus Christ. God will reveal them to us one day – we just have to be patient!

The past few months have been a growth time for TEAM 413. We’ve seen God bring people to us from all 50 states and several foreign countries. We’ve heard stories of lives changed because of a simple message on a simple running shirt - "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." We’ve shared our hearts with hundreds of thousands of people. God is working in the lives of many to mold TEAM 413. We are a project in progress!

So, join us! Help us grow. Be a part of something bigger than yourself and think outside of the ministry box. If you have a desire to serve, we’ll find a place for you. Give me a yell and let’s talk --- God may be opening a door for you to help change a life right now!

Sideline Note:

On my way to the Chicago Half Marathon Expo on Saturday morning, I was driving along Lakeshore Drive on the western shore of Lake Michigan. This area is a popular spot for walkers, runners, and bikers. As I drove along, I looked toward the path and I saw a lady wearing one of our TEAM 413 shirts. It was white with bright lettering.

What made this sighting unique is that she had not picked up this shirt in Chicago because we have never offered that color at any of the shows in the city. It was purchased at another race somewhere in the United States! God opened my eyes to something that goes along with my GRACERUNNER Journal entry from above….Grassroots ministry! Here I was in Chicago, Illinois having traveled from Birmingham, Alabama and I see a person wearing a TEAM 413 shirt on the side of the road that I just ‘happened’ to be driving on at that moment in time! There wasn’t a race or big event going on --- this was one single person sharing her faith through the ministry of TEAM 413. I was able to get a glimpse of the seeds that are being planted all around the world!

I always tell people that there will be a ‘story’ behind their shirt! Well, on this day, I became the story behind that lady’s shirt! My emotions ran wild --- we started this ‘CAN DO’ mania with ONE shirt. We travel to city after city ONE at a time. We put shirts on ONE person at a time. And, here I was in the third largest city in the United States looking at ONE shirt out of the 35,000 we have placed on people from all over the world! WOW! That's amazing grace in motion!

Simply Not the Same!

We drove down the roads of the east coast late at night…ETA 3:52 AM! Driving to Virginia Beach into the eye of Hurricane Earl for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon – 2010 Edition!

Kiki and I hold this race in a special place in our heart. It was here where the Runner’s Prayer that we have on our shirts, on bookmarks, and that I write about in my book was originally said during a pre-race devotion. It was here back in 2004 that I ran what I thought might be my last race having been clinically diagnosed with MS only to eventually learn that dysautonomia was the culprit that had taken over my body. It was at this race in 2008 that I struggled to finish through the heat and humidity against odds that I could not imagine considering my health at the time.

It is this place where people have come back again and again to say that they saw our shirts in a race, a city, a store, a fitness center and the message helped them – They would declare that they now wanted to help someone else! It was here that we met some of our biggest TEAM 413 supporters – Jackie, Tonya, Danny, Karla, Jerome, and so many more. It was here where we stood on the beach and listened to the B52’s and Kiki and I have lived part of the life that we missed together. This road of late night travel was nothing for us – it was a trip to a place where our lives have been molded, changed, and celebrated!

As we drove TOWARD Hurricane Earl there was no hesitation because we knew that God would take care of us. Kiki was able to visit with one of her best friends from high school who she has not seen in more than 25 years! Once again, this race has personal meaning to us and will hold a special place in our hearts as we continue to move forward with the ministry of TEAM 413.

Just as this race is “simply not the same,” neither am I when we take off for a TEAM 413 event. It is God’s calling in my life. Kiki calls me a ‘different person’ when I put on the TEAM 413 shirt, when I’m able to serve the people who God brings my way, when RACE DAY approaches. Regardless of how I’ve felt physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually – God refuels my soul during a TEAM 413 event! Things happen that can only be described as miracles of grace straight from the heart of God. I can’t wait to get on the road and meet new people – it’s a gift!

Life has taken a toll on my body, mind, and the heart of my soul. Yet, God has never given up on me. He has never forsaken me. And, at this very moment He is at work in me unlike any other time in my life. He is preparing us for full-time ministry one day soon. He is laying the groundwork for us to take TEAM 413 to a totally different level. He is about to do something that we cannot comprehend!

Please join me as I pray for guidance for the next move that we make. Pray with me that God will do such a work in others and in me that we are “simply not the same!”

God's Greatest Gifts

I was asked to give the devotion at our opening faculty meeting for the School of Education and Professional Studies at Samford University, where I teach, today. I've delivered invocations, pre-race devotions, spoken in front of thousands of people, and taught for more than 30 years. Nevertheless, today I was nervous and I'm not sure why. So, I'd like to share that devotional with all of you. I think that God gave me the words to say and just maybe it will hit home with you as well.

When my daughter, Ashley, (who is now 24) was about 6-years-old I called her a "character." One day she asked me, "What's a character?" I explained to her that me calling her a "character" was kind of like calling her a "mess" or "funny." But, I went on to teach a Dad lesson. I also told her that "character" was God's heartbeat in you that helps you do the right thing even when no one else will ever know and that I believed that good "character" was a gift from God.

We find the following words in God's word -- I Peter 4: 10 - 11

10 God's gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully. 11 If you speak, you should do it like one speaking God's very words. If you serve, you should do it with the strength God provides. Then in ALL things God will be praised through Jesus Christ.

I believe that God has given us gifts that we don’t know we have because we haven’t listened to His ever present voice through the words of others, through studying His word, or through prayer. So, over the past few years I’ve tried to listen more attentively and God has taught me so much. He has taught me to have a little more patience, to be more humble, to have respect for others even when I don’t understand them. And, maybe above all, He has taught me to never minimize, discount, or dismiss another’s feelings because when I do, I minimize, discount, or dismiss Him!

My devotion OR challenge for all of us as we begin this new school year is to allow everything that we do in our daily walk – in the classroom – in meetings – in the stillness of a moment be TOTALLY-COMPLETELY Christ centered. If we do this, then we have accomplished much toward showing the grace that God exemplified for us through sending Christ as our Redeemer.

A few days ago I posted this quote on my Facebook page as my status update. It's received a lot of feedback and I think it is appropriate at this time ...

Storyteller Challenge

Sometimes it just gets downright hard to put words on the page. I have so much to share and yet, when I sit at my computer there are moments when I can’t write. Some call it writer’s block. I call it, “I have too much in my head syndrome.”

Days go by and we see and feel things that deserve to be written about or the story should be told in some other way. Yet, we don’t do it. Some ignore their gift of writing and others just don’t notice their surroundings. My problem is that God gifted me with the ability to see things in a different way – to describe the circumstances at hand in common words – to tell a story. The bottom line is that I’m a storyteller and right now, I’m having difficulty telling them! That’s a hard place to be when you are a storyteller!

So, my GRACERUNNER Journal for today is about being a storyteller. How does one become a storyteller? How do you have the ability when others don’t? I guess that the answer is fairly simple – I can’t run like the wind. I can’t hit a 90 mile-an-hour fastball. I can’t play golf without almost killing myself or someone else! One of my gifts, as I see it, is to tell the story at hand. It’s an opportunity to describe, create an analogy, share a moment, or paint a picture with words.

My plight has been that I have too much going on around me and I have not been paying attention to the little things. I have not been able to generate stories because of all the hustle and bustle in my life. But, the past few days I’ve been enjoying my last days off before we start the fall semester at Samford University, where I teach. It’s also the last long vacation I’ll have for a good while because of our TEAM 413 event schedule. I have truly relaxed during this time! It’s hard for me to do – but, I’ve done it! And, I’m going to do it for a few more days too!

To help me tell the stories that I need to tell, I need YOUR help. Each time we put someone in a TEAM 413 running shirt, I tell them that there will be a story behind that shirt! I’ve heard many of your stories and they are terrific! We need more….so, here’s the deal. Send me your best TEAM 413 “shirt story” including a picture of yourself in one of the shirts. I, along with our panel of “professional” judges, will choose the top three stories and with your permission, we’ll publish them in our GRACERUNNER Journal and possibly include them in my second book, “Cobalt Blue Sky Days – Stories of God’s Grace.”

Planning Ahead

Life has been a series of adventures this summer. I plan to put it all in words soon. We still need to recap Grandma's Marathon -- family happenings - including our summer with Hanna, Gerrit, & Willie (see above) -- and our vacation along the beaches of South Walton County, Florida. Kiki is naturally taking all of the pictures but she has had her hands full with planning, working, and keeping up with the two kids, Willie, and me!

This summer I have done a lot of introspective soul searching for what God will have us do in the future and the direction we are headed with TEAM 413. I want to share my thoughts with you soon. I believe that He has much in store in the years to come and some exciting things are about to happen.

We'll be announcing new GRACERUNNER PROJECTS in several cities soon -- we are going to Chicago at the end of July for the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon and then to Virginia Beach on Labor Day Weekend for another Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon -- and we'll post our fall schedule sometime over the next few weeks. There is much work to be done and we need many of you to help.
